Academic Operation Guideline

CHAPTER 1 GENERAL PROVISIONS

Article 1 (Purpose)

The purpose of these guidelines is to establish the academic operations of the School of Applied AI Convergence at Sungkyunkwan University (hereinafter referred to as "the School").

 

Article 2 (Educational Goals)

The educational goals of the School are to cultivate talents who will lead the Fourth Industrial Revolution era by meeting the upskilling demands of the industry, based on the founding philosophy of the university, "Cultivating oneself to govern others" (修己治人), and the guiding principles of benevolence, righteousness, propriety, and wisdom (仁義禮智).

 

Article 3 (Employment Obligation)
  • Students admitted through the employment-based track of the School must maintain their employment status during their period of study.
  • Each semester, students must submit a certificate of employment issued within one month prior to the submission date to the administrative office by the last day of the semester.

 

 

CHAPTER 2 GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS FOR UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAMS

Article 4 (Credit Completion)
  • In accordance with the academic regulations, students must complete the required credits and meet the graduation requirements, with major credits to be completed as specified in the table below:
  • Double majors are limited to majors within the School of Applied AI Convergence.

Article 5 (Graduation Evaluation) 
  • In place of a graduation evaluation, students must complete capstone projects and problem-solving project courses for their respective majors as follows:
  • Students pursuing a double major within the School may fulfill the graduation evaluation requirement by completing the relevant courses for their primary major.

CHAPTER 3 SELECTION OF SCHOLARSHIP STUDENTS

Article 6 (Merit-Based Scholarships)
  • Each semester, scholarship students are selected based on the highest grade point average (GPA) among employed students, according to the allocated number of scholarship recipients.
  • Students must have completed at least 15 credits in their first and second years and 12 credits (9 credits in the seventh semester) in their third and fourth years, with an average GPA of 3.0 or higher in the previous semester, without any failing grades.
  • In the event of a tie in GPA, the following criteria will be used to determine the recipient: number of credits earned, major credits earned, major GPA, number of major courses completed, number of courses completed, and length of employment.

 

Article 7 (School of Applied AI Convergence Scholarships)
  • The Dean of the School of Applied AI Convergence (hereinafter referred to as "the Dean") may award scholarships to students who have contributed to the development of the School, are financially disadvantaged, or have achieved academic excellence, as recommended by the head professor of the major.
  • The School of Applied AI Convergence Scholarships are categorized as follows:
    • (1) School of Applied AI Convergence Scholarship A
    • (2) School of Applied AI Convergence Scholarship B
  • The School of Applied AI Convergence Scholarship A covers 70% of tuition, while Scholarship B covers 30% of tuition.

 

 

CHAPTER 4 MAJOR ASSIGNMENT

Article 8 (Eligibility and Timing)
  • Eligible students are those who have registered for and completed their first and second semesters in the first year after being admitted to the School.
  • Majors are determined at the beginning of the second year.

 

Article 9 (Major Application)

Eligible students must apply for their preferred major during the designated period through the online application system.

 

Article 10 (Major Entry Requirements)
  •  Students must meet the following minimum credit requirements to enter a major:
  •  If the entry requirements are not met, the Dean may assign a major at their discretion.

Article 11 (Applicable Grades for Major Entry) 
  • The GPA used for major entry will be based on the grades earned during the first and second semesters of the first year.
  • Grades from summer/winter sessions and special exams will be included, but grades from inter-university exchange courses and summer/winter sessions at other universities will not be included.
  • The GPA will be calculated by multiplying the grade points of each course by the number of credits and dividing the total by the number of credits attempted, considering the following:
    • 1. P/F courses are excluded.
    • 2. Withdrawn courses are excluded from the credit calculation.
    • 3. For students who have repeated a year, the GPA will be based on the grades earned after the repetition.

 

Article 12 (Maximum Number of Students for Major Entry)

The maximum number of students for each major is calculated as follows, with fractions rounded up:

  • Number of eligible first-year students/2) × 120%
  • In the case of a tie for the final spot, the Dean may make exceptions and assign students at their discretion.

 

Article 13 (Selection of Students for Major Entry)
  •  Students who meet the major entry requirements will be selected for their preferred major in order of GPA, up to the maximum number of students allowed.
  •  In the event of a tie in GPA, the following criteria will be used: number of credits earned, major credits earned, major GPA, number of major courses completed, and number of courses completed. In case of a final tie, the Dean may assign the student to their preferred major.

 

1.1.1. Article 14 (Discretionary Assignment)

 Students who do not apply for a major within the designated period may be assigned a major by the Dean at their discretion.

 

1.1.1. Article 15 (Relationship to Repetition of a Year)

 Even if a student repeats a year after entering a major, they will not be given another opportunity to enter a different major.

 

1.1.1. Article 16 (Disciplinary Committee)

In the event of improper procedures in major selection, grade manipulation, or the dissemination of malicious rumors about specific majors, the student may be subject to disciplinary action by the committee, which could result in restrictions on major entry.

 

1.1.1. Article 17 (Miscellaneous)

The GPA cutoff for major entry in each academic year will not be disclosed in order to maintain the fairness of the major entry process, as well as due to changes in the number of students and major quotas.
